With a heat warning in effect across Ontario, staying cool should be a top priority this week as we dive into the season's first heat wave!
Tips to Stay Cool This Summer:
- Stay Hydrated: Health Canada advises drinking lots of water before you feel thirsty, and especially if you are outdoors during this time.
- Close Curtains/Blinds: Health Canada recommends keeping your curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day to minimize the heat from penetrating your home. This will significantly reduce the indoor temperature.
- Do Not Use Oven: Find alternative cooking methods by avoiding the oven. Using your oven during this hot summer can add heat inside your home.
- Seek Cool Areas: Health Canada suggests taking breaks from the heat by visiting tree-shaded spots, public swimming pools, libraries, friends' homes, shopping malls that are equipped with air conditioning.
- Clothing Choices: Health Canada recommends wearing loose-fitting, breathable clothing in light colours to help regulate body temperature and promote airflow.
- Quick Cooling Techniques: Health Canada suggest airing out your living space overnight during the cooler evenings, allowing natural cool air to circulate. Additionally, they advise that using a shower to cool down will reduce your body temperature.
It is very important to recognize and response to heat-related symptoms. These symptoms can include fainting, disorientation, severe nausea, vomiting, extreme thirst or difficulty speaking. Health Canada advises people to call 911 immediately in such situations.
We hope everyone stays cool out there!
